Can direct payments be reversed?
A reversal request may be made by the paying agency for an erroneous direct deposit payment that has been transmitted to the automated clearing house (ACH) network. A reversal is an attempt to retrieve the funds; it is not a guarantee the funds will be recovered.
If you notice an error on the same day a payment was made, you can call your bank and reverse the payment immediately. However, if you notice it at any point afterwards, your bank will need to make an 'indemnity claim' to the collecting organisation on your behalf.
The ACH (Automated Clearing House) system offers a brief window in which you can reverse a direct deposit. The reversal must meet two conditions: Timing: A reversal has to be initiated within five banking days after the settlement date of the original transaction.
“Payment reversal” is a blanket term for any situation in which transaction funds are returned to the cardholder's bank account. Payment reversals are also known as “credit reversals” or a “reversal payment.” Authorization reversals, refunds, and chargebacks are all forms of payment reversals.

In other states, like California, employee consent is required first or it is considered an unlawful deduction. Depending on how your direct deposit authorization form is worded, that may give the employee's consent to a reversal.
Re: Reversing payment
This can be done at a branch or through the call centre on 0860 123 000. There are no fees associated with this reversal as long as the transaction is reversed within 40 days of the transaction taking place.
You can either get in touch with your bank or building society and tell them which one you want to stop, or you can cancel online or via your banking app. To make things simple, it's also worth telling the organisation you were paying that you've stopped the Direct Debit.
Can a bank refuse to refund a Direct Debit?
Every organisation using Direct Debit is inspected and vetted by the banks before they're allowed to collect your money. The banks are responsible for money being refunded if things were to go wrong, so you can bet they're very thorough.
The Direct Debit Guarantee applies to all Direct Debit payments. It protects you in the rare event there's an error in the set up or collection of your Direct Debit, for instance, if a payment is taken on the incorrect date, or it's for the wrong amount.
If there is a valid authenticated debit order and mandate: You can't dispute the debit order if the money deducted from your account matches the mandate.
The good news is that cancelled direct debits can be reinstated, allowing you to retain the same Bacs reference. However, it goes without saying that you need the payer's permission to do so.

Legally, if a sum of money is accidentally paid into your bank or savings account and you know that it doesn't belong to you, you must pay it back.
The delay by the bank can be because of many reasons like Bank holidays, different time zones, etc. Normally pending transactions are not canceled or reversed.
It can take about five to 10 days for funds to be returned to the sender. This timeline can speed up if the account holder to whom the deposit was intended is in good standing with the bank.
Authenticated debit order
You have previously authorised the mandate using your card and PIN. If there is a valid authenticated debit order and mandate: You can't dispute the debit order if the money deducted from your account matches the mandate.
Please be aware that this is a scam that could leave you out of pocket and with substantial debt still to repay. You might see an advert or be contacted on social media or in person about making quick, easy money by claiming back refunds on your direct debits via your bank. This includes rent payments.
How do I dispute a debit purchase?
Contact your bank to discuss your situation. A good place to start is to visit their website and look for details on 'disputed transactions' or 'chargeback claims'. If you can't find it, get in touch with your card provider and tell them you want to use the 'chargeback scheme'.
